About The Piece
About The Piece
William Arthur Smith Benson, an advocate of the Arts and Crafts movement, actively campaigned for the recognition of crafts as a legitimate art form through his involvement with the National Exhibition of the Arts. His vision for an exhibition showcasing decorative art led to the establishment of 'The Combined Arts Exhibition Society,' later evolving into the 'Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society,' defining the ethos of the Arts and Crafts movement of that era. Although he initially pursued Classical and Philosophical studies at Oxford, Benson redirected his focus to architecture, a field that seamlessly merged his interests in art and engineering.
Relocating to London for an architectural apprenticeship, Benson crossed paths with Sir Edward Burne-Jones, a Pre-Raphaelite painter, whose influence nurtured Benson's creative instincts. Transitioning into metalwork during the 1880s, Benson founded his own workshop, producing and selling innovative designs. His union with Venetia Hunt, a friend of Burne-Jones' daughter, expanded his clientele significantly. Benson's extensive portfolio featured hundreds of items tailored for contemporary living during a period of societal transformation. Addressing the changing dynamics of households, where clients managed their homes without staff, Benson introduced a brass and copper lacquer to prevent tarnishing, proving immensely successful in modern homes.
What set Benson apart from his Arts and Crafts peers was his keen enthusiasm for industry and machinery. His workshop brimmed with various machines and chemicals integral to his creative process, evident in his work through intricate mechanisms, joints, and visible wires.
